New Year, New Me. A stress free zone.

I know I haven't blogged in a while and wasn't quite sure what to blog about. Until this morning, that is.

I am not a believer in New Year resolutions. I have done that in the past with no success whatsoever. So, I stopped. What resolution did I really want to keep anyway? I did it because it was the thing to do, I guess. I have noticed that i am slowly changing myself as the new year gets going. I am finding that, I do not need to get myself stressed out over things I have no control over. As, anyone in my family will tell you, I am a control freak. Very slowly and one by one, I am giving up control over situations. I am not picking restaurants any more. Oh sure! If there is somewhere I'd like to go I'll say so but, there are other people also. Just because we set a time for leaving, I am not going to stress myself out over the fact we are 5 minutes leaving to get there at a certain time. The restaurants we go to don't take reservations anyway. What difference does it make? None! I am no longer taking charge of the bill. Let others pay. I don't need to control that part either. Of course like yesterday I had cash.

I am also going to enjoy the journey of knitting. If a project takes me a couple of days to do then, that's ok. It's not a rush to see how fast I can get things done. The power of one is big but, the power of a group is huge! I don't have to do it all.

I think the thing that gets me thinking is the fact that I will be turning 60 in July. Now this is huge! lol As a kid, I thought I will never be THAT old! Well... guess what? It's not really that old at all. I have noticed a slowing process and I am liking it. There is no need to rush any more. Enjoy the journey! Enjoy life! We don't know when we will be called home so, we need to enjoy the day to day.

I am enjoying going to my craft room and 'shopping' for yarn. I did get it somewhat organize with the same yarns together. Worsted weight, wool, baby yarns, etc. I am doing well knitting/crocheting my stash down. It's going to take me a while but, I am enjoying doing it.

My vacation has started

As per my work schedule, I was scheduled off. I had 1 more vacation day to use and as going to use it yesterday. I was scheduled to work this weekend, but seeing as Sunday is Christmas, they are shutting down. As luck would have it, I would have had to work today but, they only need 2 people for half of the shift. They are letting me use my vacation day for today and one of the other guys agreed to come in for half of the day. So, now I am not scheduled to go back to work until Jan. 2nd. They also decided to shut down at 4pm. So now, Doug has today and tomorrow off also. Normally, they do not care and have 2nd shift work anyway. We only get one holiday off a year and this is it. That's the dairy business for you.

Yarn stash

The end of 2011 is fast approaching. What I would like to do in the new year is to start knitting/crocheting down my stash. In preparation for this, I have started to log every partial & full skein I have. I am using Ravelry for this. This ia no easy task and could be a little overwhelming. I decided to take each drawer in the plastic bins, one by one and handle it that way. Drawer by drawer. This way, it is not so daunting. Plus, I get to put it back in groups of same weight. So far I have logged in something like 56 skeins. That was only in 4 drawers. :( most of them are partials though. Where you finish a project and have some left but, not enough for another project. Are you going to throw it away?? NO! It gets stashed. That's what I have a lot of. So what am I going to do with all of these partials? Well... what I would LIKE to do is to make an oddball blanket. I really love that idea. Just keep connecting yarn withou caring where it stops in the row. Just connect the next one and keep going. I really want to get a handle on this. I have plastic bins in my closet, in my bedroom, in my spare room that I am using for my craft room, I have baskets on the shelf. I don't think I put any under the bed but, you never know. This is going to be a new year with a new focus. There may come a time where I may have to buy some but, I hope to make this an exception and not the rule. I don't buy cold meat for sandwiches untilb the old stuff is gone so it doesn't go bad. Maybe, I can treat the yarn the same way.
I joined a couple of destash groups on ravelry. Hopefully for some inspiration. For the most part, if I want something bad enough, I will get it. So I am hoping I want this bad eough to make this happen. I am off to a good start. Now to stay focused and get it done.

Christmas

I ended up having a 4 day weekend. Saturday and Sunday being my usual weekend off, vacation day for today, and one of the guys needed my Thursday off, so I switched his Tuesday for my Thursday. I can't believe 2 days are gone already.
Yesterday was spent putting up Christmas decorations. Rachel didn't have to go in to work until 3:45pm, and Doug had the day off. There is still the fireplace to do, which is my project, and not sure what to do yet. Will finish it up today, hang the lighted wreath outside and we are good to go. There is a Christmas Tree Shoppe over in Wilmington, which is not that far away, that I would love to get to. Maybe after the holidays to get some good deals. We'll see.

What I've been doing

I do hope all is well with everyone. It's really hard to believe this year is almost gone. It has gone by too fast for me.

Besides continuing to suppose Bridge and Beyond, I have decided to try and knit an adult size sweater. Yep! For me. I have tried a few patterns but, did not make it very far.
I belong to a few groups on Ravelry but, one in particular is BabyCocktails. She designs very pretty sweater patterns and a couple of hat patterns. These are not free patterns. She names her patterns after drinks. Gimlet, Irish Coffee, mulled Cider but, one in particular is called White Russian. Also, some of her patterns are pieced together. This one is made top down in one piece, putting the sleeve stitches on holders then, coming back and finishing them. I bought some Berroco Vintage yarn to make this sweater with. I love how soft it is. Will post aa WIP when I get home from work tonight. I just hope the yarn isn't too dark to show the details. Knitting something this size can be quite daunting but, I am not letting myself think about that. It's done when it's done. I'm in no hurry and trying to enjoybthe experience of something new.

RIP Kitty

We got Kitty when he was 6 weeks old from a friend we used to work with. Already having Fluffy and Sasha, I said sure. Why not? I did not grow up with cats. We always had a dog though. I am so glad I said yes. He was quite the character. As hard as I tried to make him an indoor cat, he had other plans. I love this picture because his face says it all. He loved hanging out with me in my recliner. Either in my lap or by my legs. It didn't matter. The one thing he never went after was my yarn. Don't know why that was. He got along great with Sasha and now with Roxie. They were best buds. They would lay on the floor together rubbing heads and playing.

I would always have to watch my step as I walked out the front door. Didn't know if there was going to be a mouse, a bird, a squirrel, a bunny. You just never knew. I always petted him and said thank you because I knew what he was doing.

He was 12 y/o and the way he was acting lately, I often wondered how much time he had left. Not sure how many bunnies he had gotten this one day but, that was to be his last spree, so to speak. I know you would come home if you could. At some point I knew you couldn't. The hardest part was not being there for you and not being able to say good bye and have closure. I miss you dearly but, know you went out the way you lived your life and would not want it any other way.
RIP my friend. You will always have a special place in my heart forever. I love you.

FO Friday

Seeing as I missed WIP Wednesday, I thought I would get them both in today. I took the tube sock on our trip to Connecticut last weekend and finished it Saturday morning. I didn't bring any other yarn so I had no choice but to cast on for the 2nd sock. The colors of the two look so different. I had 2 skeins. Both with the same lot number. I guess they just got wound up different. Well.. they are socks.

This is my new toy that arrived today. I have been wanting a swift and ball winder for the longest time. I just didn't know what to get. The ball winder is a jumbo one and can wind skeins up to 8 oz. A lot of the ones I found only held up to 4 oz. So 2 of the balls on the table I had wound by hand and redid. The 3rd one, I had to use the swift. OMG! It is the best thing since sliced bread.

I am going to get off as we are getting a bad thunder storm and not sure if we'll lose electricity or not. Sometimes we do.. sometimes we don't. One never knows.

Going away for the weekend

This is my normal 3 day weekend. Friday, Saturday & Sunday. My husband was suppose to work Saturday , but as it turns out, he does not. I asked him if we could go to Connecticut this weekend. He was able to use a vacation day for tomorrow. So, we are planning to leave around 8pm tonight which will get us there around midnight. I don't like night driving but, really like the light traffic. We will be up for 3 days, coming back on Snday. We have nothing planned to do except to seeor sons and the girlfriends and kids. I just needed to get away for a coupe of days. and yes.. the yarn and needles are coming with me. The tube sock is almost done. Will try and post a pic Sunday when we get back. I will not bring another project except t bring the other skein of yarn to knit the 2nd sock. I know me too well. lol

WIP Wednesday

This is very easy going. I really like working with 2 circs. Less fiddling and quicker. I am at the point where I need 8 1/2" of stockinette and only have 3 1/4" done. I am hoping to get this done by Friday.

This is going to be a short post as I just got up and haven't had my coffee yet. Just didn't want to miss WIP Wednesday. I am off to visit blogs. Bringing my spell check along, as my fingers aren't quite working yet. lol

Update Sunday

I managed to pick a pattern from my YoP list. Pattern: Easy Knit Tube Sock pattern. Technically it's a sock but, not a sock sock. This may not even be considered a sock because of the yarn I am using.
Yarn: Patons Astra
Colorway: High Energy. It is that! lol Yellow, red, orange, purple.
Needle size: 7

There are reasons why I chose this pattern instead of the other sock pattern.

1. I wanted to see how easy it would be to knit on 2 circs instead of DPNs. There are 52 sts I had to cast. 26 on each needle. I am really liking it. So much easier to handle 2 needles instead of 4.

2. I wanted to get a handle on this ladder thing. I know the stitch has to be pulled tight from one needle to the next BUT, do you have the stitches on the cable or on the metal part of the needle (Assuming you are using metal needles lol).

I tried it both ways. It's tricky but, it can be done. I tried having the stitches on the cable of the non-working needle. I was pulling too tight. I was having a hard time getting the stitch from the cable to the needle when it was time to knit them.

I tried having the stitches on the needle part but, found I was getting the ladders that way even pulling the yarn tight. So.. I went back to putting the stitches from the non-working needle on the cable but, being careful not to pull too tight but, tight enough not to get the ladder. There is a fine line there folks. lol At least from my perspective.

I just figured with this pattern there is 6" of ribbing and another 8 1/2" of stockinette stitch before the decreases start. This is only one sock. I should get plenty of practice in before committing to doing a sock with a heel. Although this yarn label says it a (3) light, it feels thick. When this is done it will almost be like a slipper sock because of the thickness.

I know there are sock people out there that will correct me if I'm wrong in how I am doing things. If so, feel free to comment. You will not hurt my feelings. This is how we learn. My local lys is having sock classes during Sept but, on the Saturdays I am scheduled to work. That figures. :(

FO Friday

This is the same hat I posted about on WIP Wenesday. It is now finished, this Thursday night. I am scheduling this post for FO Friday. Wouldn't want to miss it. lol If you want the particulars just scroll down a post.

I think I will pick something off my list to work on next. Come hell or high water, I will figure out how to make socks. I think I will give those a shot next and see how it goes. Can they really be that hard to do? So many people make them. I think sometimes, I make things harder than they actually are. I will post an update on Sunday with what I decided to do.

WIP Wednesday

I was not going to post about this because it is not part of YoP but thought, it is a WIP so, here it is.

I am working on yet another Mountain Man Hat. These work up fairly quickly. This one is taking longer because work is getting in the way.
Yarn used: Plymouth Encore color #599 (Deep Brown)
Needle: size 9

This hat is going to go to Bridge and Beyond. This month is focused on men's hats. Although, if you have made squares or washcloths or ladies hats those would be excepted also.

Blog name change

I have hated the name of my blog ever since I started blogging but, could never come up with something very creative. Last year at was at my lys and saw these covers for keys that said Knitwit on it with a sheep on the other side. I thought this was the cutest thing and had to have one. When I got home, I went online to my local DMV and they had the license plate available so I bought it. Of course, now, whoever takes my car is a Knitwit. lol

I am sitting here visiting blogs and it hit my like a ton of bricks. Knitwit's Knitting and Other Stuff. THAT'S IT!

Update Sunday

1. Keyhole scarf. I found this pattern on Ravelry. paula's scarfette (finished 7/18)

2. 7 Hour Toddler Sweater

3. Super Simple Sock Pattern I found this one on Ravelry. I have never made a sock and this one seems like one I might be able to do.

4. Knitting Pure & Simple 257 Split Neck T-shirt For Women At some point I would like to make a sweater for myself. This seems simple enough. We'll see.

5. Special Olympics Delaware (finished one scarf)
I picked up enough yarn for 2 scarves. 2 skeins of Red Heart Soft Navy # 4604 and Red Heart Soft Really Red # 9925. These need to be done by February 15, 2012. The place these are to be delivered to is right down the street. I can drop them off instead of mailing them.

6. Urban Shell Scarf (finished)
This is going quite nicely also. After the beginning, it's a 2 row repeat until you get to the end. Easy!

This is an update on my list so far. I am working on a project now that is not on the list. I belong to Bridge and Beyond and August is mens hat month. I will be working on this project for a bit before getting back to the list.

FO Friday

I had a suspicion I would finish this scarf but, wasn't quite sure. I should have made it a little longer but, I think it will be fine for maybe tucking in under a coat.

WIP Wednesday

I can't believe we are halfway through the week already. It is flying by!
I have started a new pattern called Urban Shells. It'sa very pretty scarf pattern./ it calls for using DK weight yarn. I started out using Berroco DK weight but, switched to Berroco Vintage Chunky in Breezeway, using a "J" hook. It is working up quite nicely. I didn't feel like the DK weight yarn was going to be warm enough for someone who has to brave the elements. Not sure how many more hanks of this yarn I have (at least 4 more lol) I bought it for something but, can't remember so I might as well use it for other things instead of hanging around. I hope the pic shows the posts well enough to see. The yarn is a little on the dark side.

I hope everyone is makng progress on their lists. I know my list is growing and I'm not alone. How are we to finish our list if it keeps getting longer? At least we have a year, right? lol More importantly we have doing it.

I'm really glad that I joined this group. It's not about seeing how much you can get done in a year, it's doing something. Making a list of things you would like to make. It's posting about it on WIP Wednesday, it's posting about it on FO Friday and maybe Update Sunday. It has really given me a purpose for blogging any more. I like sharing what I make but, didn't always post about it.

I find visiting other blogs inspiring and finding patterns I wouldn't normally. The bad thing is I find patterns that I normally wouldn't. lol Patterns have a way of finding me. I don't look for new ones. Trust me! I don't need any more. lol I'll find different hat patterns or scarf patterns and if I try it and like it, I continue. If not, I frog it and throw the pattern away. I have done this many times.

I follow a few blogs and love seeing everyone's project updates. There are some really talented people out there. Keep up the good work everyone, as I add one more project to my list. :)

Sunday's Update for YoP

I have had a change in plans on my list. When I finished the scarfette, I thought I would get the scarves done for the Special Olympics - Delaware. I started to knit one pattern, I didn't like it. I tried another knit pattern and didn't like that either. Sometimes you just have to put down the pointy sticks and pick up a hook.
I have been crocheting a lot longer than knitting and it is so much faster for me. I love the look of knit in a lot of things especially hats and mittens and I did knit a couple of scarves in the past but, not this time. I went to Crochet Pattern Central and found a terrific pattern. The problem is, they have specific guidelines that you have to stick to. 6" x 60" and specific yarn.

Instead of making the pattern on my list, I am now going to make Pretty One Skein Scarf. The only difference being, instead of making it all one color, I'm going to change colors every 5". It is a very quick and easy pattern. Just a V-Stitch. I started it last night.

As with knitting needles, I like using the bigger hooks but, to stay within the 6" wide guidelines I am using an "I" hook. I am spot on with that.
I do need to find another place to take my pics though. Either that or aim a little higher. LOL

That is it for me today. I am actually writing this early Saturday morning and posting this for Update Sunday. I am working Sunday so, this will be the best time for me to do it.

Hope your list is going well. This is really helping me stay focused on things. I like that.

Just got to thinking

My thoughts turned to the homeless this morning as I just got dressed under my ceiling fan trying to stay cool. We as crafters, are always knitting or crocheting hats, mittens, scarves for the winter to keep the homeless warm. As this is all well and good, how do we keep them cool in this brutal heat? We think of them during rain, snow, sleet, etc but, not sure what we can do for the people who really do not have an option to get out of the element's. Some have an option of a shelter to get at least got some relief. We make washcloths for hose who have an opportunity to take a shower and get cleaned up. What about those who don't? The story of a homeless is as different as there are people. Everyone has their own story. Some by choice, others not so much. My heart really goes out to these people. I think the thing that gt me to thinking is the fact that, your body can actually stop sweating. The thing of it is, your body is already at 103 or 104 and at that point, it's too late. Within 30 mins you'll be dead. It is so important to keep the body cool. The other thing I learned is that, if you do not have a/c and just a fan or whatever, as you sleep, your body will wake itself in order to sweat, keeping you cool.
I have an idea in mind but, the thing of it is, these personal fans are battery operated. If these people don't have money for food, how can they afford batteries for these little fans? Would these fans be enough anyway? Not so sure.

This problem is not only associated with the homeless. There are so many people that do not have the luxury of a/c, even though they live indoors. We that have a lot, take so much for granted. At least I know I do. We cry because the electricity goes out during a storm and then we find out how many things in our home are operated by electricity. A lot!

I do not have an answer for this problem. I wish I did. It just makes me feel sad. We all help the best we know how. We have helped so many already. The need is so great all over the country for one reason or another. We all do our part. Crafters have such big hearts, we are always looking for ways to help others.

Please pray for the less fortunate and please keep those needles, hooks and looms working and give to where your heart tells you. It will be appreciated and the rewards you reap will far out weigh what you give out.

FO Friday

Hooray! I have actually finished something from my YoP list.

This is Pauls's Scarfette. I was looking for a keyhole scarf and came across this pattern in Ravelry. It was very quick and easy to knit. Wasn't sure how fast it would be but, I started it on the 16th and finished it on the 18th.
Yarn used: Berroco Vintage Chunky Breezeway colorway 6194.
It took just about one skein. As you can see there is very little left over. This should be a nice and warm for the winter.
Needle size: 9

I will probably make this again.

WIP Wednesday

It's the little things I learn by going to different blogs. Like, putting the YoP on the side bar instead of taking up blog space. It's so easy to see also. You don't have to keep going back through the posts to find it. This was my AH HA! moment. LOL

This is a pic of my WIP on the Easy Knit Tube Sock. There isn't a sock pattern I haven't tried where I haven't ended up with ladders. I try and pull the yarn tight when going from needle to needle but, I still get them. I think this is the reason why I have not made socks. My lys was going to have a class in early June but, had to cancel the class because there were only 2 of us that wanted to sign up and they needed 3. I would have paid for the 3rd person just to get the pattern and take the class. Aly assured me that there would be other classes. A lot of people are away for the summer and it's difficult to get people for the summer classes.

This is my 1st time trying to knit on 2 circs. So far, it is much easier than trying to use all those blasted DPNs. This is just a K2 P2 ribbing for 6" and then straight knitting. There is no heel or anything. When the piece measures 8 1/2", start the decrease. I find this going very slow. I am not used to smaller needles. I typically use 7s or 8s. I did notice that I started having a problem with my hands. If it continues, I will not do this project and go with a little thicker yarn and bigger needles. It won't be worth it to me to continue if my hands are going to cramp up. I will give a good go at it though.

I finished Paula's scarfette and will post about it on FO Friday.

I have officially started my list

I have actually added to my list as I had forgotten about the 2 navy blue and 2 really red skeins of Red Heart yarn I picked up for the Delaware Special Olympics. I'm glad they had the colors in the soft yarn as I find the other too scratchy. These do not have to be done until February 2012. I have started on Paula's Scarfette yesterday and am half way done with it. I have listed this project on my Ravelry page but, no pic yet. I like that it is a quick knit. Have some squares to mail out to Sandy for Bridge and Beyond. I have until the end of the month. Next month is men's hats.

A new group

Well... to me it is at least. It's a Ravelry group called come blog-a-long. You can follow the link to check it out. Too much info to put here in a short amount of time. I have to get ready for work real soon. Basically, I am to make a list of projects I want to do. Every time I try to do something for myself, I never end up doing it. As you can see from previous posts, all the items I make go to charity. So!

The first thing on my list is from Knitting Pure and Simple. It's a Split Neck T Shirt for Women. I have a few sweater patterns that I had intended to make but, they are not working out to well. This seems easy enough. I have never made a sweater before so, this will be a challenge for me.

The 2nd project I would like to do is called Super Simple Sock Pattern. I have never made socks before either and found what they call an easy pattern. We'll see.

These are 2 of things I would like to accomplish for myself. If I come across anything else, I will list it here. There is no min/max amount of patterns you need to do. This is your list and your challenges. Plain and simple.

Birthday weekend

This turned into quite the birthday. Saturday morning Mike came down from Connecticut. We went to Olive Garden @ 11:30am. Love that place! Great food! Saturday night Rachel had to work so we stopped down at TGI Fridays for dessert. Their brownie is to die for! Sunday we cooked hot dogs and burgers out on the grill. Rachel & Doug both had to work Sunday night. Much to my surprise, Steve came down from Connecticut with his girlfriend Heather and her 2 kids, Briana and Tristan. We all went to Fridays again for dessert. Monday was back to work for me. Mike left to come back home around 9am and Steve left around 12:30pm after stopping by my work for a 1/2 hr during my lunch. Today, which is the true day of my birth, Rachel took me to Old Country Buffet. All you can eat for $10.49 and $1.99 for all you can drink. I am stuffed to say the least. I am glad my birthday is finally over. I can't eat any more! lol I love my family and all they do for me.

Tomorrow it will be 10 days and I will be stopping by the clinic to get the sutures out. I started with 8 and am now down to 6. lol Lost one the other day and the other tonight at the store trying on shirts for work. Thanks again Rach! We'll see how it goes.

Squares for Bridge and Beyond

July is Give A Square month at Bridge and Beyond. These are 2 that I have done so far. If I don't record the info now, I will surely forget later.

The square on the left is made with:

Pattern: 2009: The Year of the Afghan - February Square
Yarn used: Plymouth Encore #682 which is Blue Veil. It is 75% Acrylic and 25% wool. Machine wash & machine dry.
Size 7 needles.
There are instructions for different size squares with multiples of 8. I just subtracted 8 from the 44 which gave me 36 stitches which gave a square of 7" x 7".

The square on the right was made with:

Pattern: 2009: The Year of the Afghan - January Square
Yarn used: Plymouth Encore Colorspun #7127. This is a discontinued color. This yarn, even though it is worsted weight like the other, is thinner strands. Used 2 strands together. Also machine wash and machine dry.
Size 7 needles.
There are instructions for different size squares using multiples of 6. I subtracted 6 stitches from 45 and got 39. The square is 10" x 10". I could have made it smaller but, forgot to bring my measuring tape to work. I could have gone down to 33 stitches but, I'm sure she will find use for the 10" square. :)

The size of the patterns are for squares 11" x 11". Sandy is looking for squares between 7" and 10". Patterns are easily adjustable up or down in size.

Correcting my last post

In my last post, I mentioned how the Hiya Hiya needles have red cords. They don't the ChiaoGoo ones do. These were special ones Linda, at my lys, had ordered. She didn't get too many because she didn't know how they would sell. I love them! Some people don't. The cord doesn't stay wound up like others do.
Anyway.. just wanted to correct that.

New knitting needles

Over the past couple of years, I have tried different types of needles. I do not like acrylic. The yarn doesn't slide. Especially in the summer. I am partial to metal. Maybe because of the fact that all I used was metal crochet hooks for years. I tried acrylic ones and the yarn didn't slide with those either.
I have heard a lot of talk on the internet about Knitpick needles. They also carry different types. I have been putting off buying them because I have been using the Hiya Hiya needles I get from my lys. I decided to buy 2. One size 7 and one size 8. Those are the 2 that I use the most. Other than the fact that, one cable is red and one is purple, I can't tell the difference. The other difference is price. The Knitpicks are cheaper. The Hiya Hiyas are $10.00 and the kps were 7 and change. I don't think I'll be getting any more because I have enough right now but, it's nice to know I have an alternative place to get my needles if I ever need any again and I actually like them as much as the ones I've been using.

Washcloths, soap and more

The sweater, yellow hat and slippers will be sent to Joplin, Missouri. The 3 hats will be sent to Lisa at Central Ohio Binky Patrol for the Snowball Express project : http://centralohiobinkypatrol.weebly.com/snowball-express.html . They are collecting 600 hats for children of military fallen heroes. As of June 1st, they have received 482 hats. The only stipulation is that they fit children 5 - 18. The possibility for hats is endless.

New washcloth pattern

This is the pattern I posted about in my last post. Please scroll down to get the link. I used Sugar'n Cream in Green Dream. I used size 6 needles. Not sure how much of a difference size 7 would be but, I don't think I want the stitches to be too loose.

Once you get the 6 rows down, it's a really fast knit. I will be doing this pattern again. I really like how it came out.

Yes! I am off today and tomorrow. YIPPEE! Not enjoying the heat though but, we are getting into summer aren't we? lol Had a thunder and lightening storm last night but, no rain. :( We need it bad!

I found a new dishcloth/washcloth pattern. It's from Thrifty Knitter. Not that I need any more patterns but, am always on the look out for interesting ones. Sometimes one comes along that's a must have. I'm going to print this one out and give it a shot.

The jury is still out as to where I will send the items I'm making but, there is a connection in Alabama through the Ohio Binky Patrol. Sandy and I have been looking into this. It would be nice to help out the people down there. Even in a small way. I have given myself until the end of June anyway. I should have something by then.

Making progress on the washcloths

Here are 3 washcloths I've knit up. Upper left was made with Sugar'n Cream Creamsickle. I used a free knitting pattern from Lion Brand called Laguna Beach Washcloth. You can't tell from the picture but it is a basket weave pattern. The pink is Sugar'n Cream Rose Petal and the last is Sugar'n Cream Chocolate Ombre. Both made with Seed Stitch Pattern and all 3 were made with size 6 needles and approx 9"x9".

I hope everyone is finding ways to stay cool. A/C is my best friend right now. lol

Devastation in the south

With the tornadoes ripping through Joplin Missouri, OK, etc, the devastation down there is incredible. I can't imagine going through such a thing. There is so much need for food, clothing, toiletries, etc that, it can be a little overwhelming as to where to start. Believing in the power of 1 makes a big difference. I have decided to take the month of June and make things just to go down there. Not sure how much I'll get down but, whatever it is I know it'll be appreciated.
I have made one sweater called Simple Knitting Pattern for children's Pullover. I can't find the link to the pattern at the moment. It's made from the top down in one piece and the sides are sewn together. The 2nd sweater I am working on is the 10th Anniversary Knit for Kids Sweater. These sweaters were made before I decided to send to Joplin or OK. I went to Joann's and got 4 Sugar'N Cream cotton to make washcloths with. I made one washcloth using the Seed Stitch Washcloth pattern and the 2nd one I am using the Laguna Beach Washcloth. A free pattern from the Lion Brand site.
Will post pics when I get a few things finished. I am not a very fast knitter but, I will do the best I can do. I found a couple of drop off locations in OK with addresses but not for Joplin yet.
This is going to be ongoing for quite a while. These people have lost everything. It's so sad.

Happy Easter!

I guess it has been quite a while since I updated. Doug & I took last Thursday and Friday off and were working on the inside of the house. Our son Steve, who moved up here with us from Florida, moved to Connecticut. We replaced the bedroom door and repainted the ceiling and the walls. When we moved into the house, it really didn't need painting or anything. So we left it. Rachel has since took his room. We replaced the door in her old room and painted the walls. I took this room so I can have my craft room. We also replaced the bedroom door to our bedroom. I didn't paint in there yet. That is to come later. The reason we replaced the bedrooms doors is because when we moved in, all of the doors were painted white. We replaced them with Luan and stained them along with the molding around the doors. It looks awesome. I am so pleased at how the came out. I should have taken before and after pics but didn't think of it at the time. There was also a carport at one time and they made a room out of it. We also replaced that door but, didn't stain that one. It has 6 panels in it and can be painted white. That one didn't matter. We have had a very busy few days and will be glad to get back to work. LOL
We are still not done with what we want to do but, we got a lot done and very pleased with how everything is turning out.

Happy Anniversary!

Doug & I will be married 23 years today. I think that is just awesome! He had off from work yesterday so, we went to see the movie Unstoppable. What an awesome movie! Held my attention through the whole movie. Afterwards, we went to Olive Garden to eat. When the server 1st came over she asked if I would like to taste a wine for charity. They would charge .25. Sure! Turns out that was the best .25 glass of wine I have ever had! I had 2 glasses @ $5.95 a glass. Great food! Doug loved the Vino Blanco Pork Scaloppini. I had the Capellini di Mare which had clams, mussels & shrimp with thin spaghetti. The zesty sauce scared me so the server said they could put a plain sauce on it. Turns out it was a 3 cheese sauce. Awesome! We want more! If we could go back today, I would in a heartbeat!
Great movie.. great food.. great company.. great day! It was a lot of fun just the two of us.

RIP Fluffy

Fluffy passed away at 6:30 this morning. He was 14 years old. In human age he was 74. He had a wonderful long life and loved by everyone.

He only ventured outside a few times but, would love to lay in the kitchen window. He was really the best cat anyone could ever wish for.

I received an email from Lion Brand this morning as I usually do with patterns and stuff. When I see things that might interest me, I click. One thing lead to another and came across this.
www.knitnstyle.com It's a web magazine. There is a headline Knitting for Charity. I always read about this when I come across it. For some reason I can't paste anything from the page or link.
There is a link in the article, www.goodgoes.org If you follow that link, it will take you to another page. Caps for Good There is a lot of info there. It is through Save the Children but, because they don't have the storage space for a large amount of caps, they are being sent to the Doe Fund in New York until February, where they will be sent out.

We all have those little pieces of yarn left over. What to do with them? Some make little squares or whatever. These little caps don't take much yarn either. They mention using medium weight (4) yarn. There are 2 free patterns to use. One is knit, the other is a crochet pattern and both use about 1 oz of yarn.
I am all about helping people in this country, and I am doing that but, I just couldn't resist this.

In this season of giving, please think about maybe sending a cap or 2 for this worthy cause. It is only until February 11, 2011.

As promised

Here is a pic of the Toasty Twisty scarf. It's made with Red Heart Soft Yarn in Teal. I am hoping you can see the pattern but, if not, you saw it in a previous post. I used size 8 needles. It measures 46" by 4 1/2" in the center and 7" on the ends. This will be going to Millie for one of her charities.

I am off the next 3 days. I have a date with the leaf blower tomorrow if it doesn't rain tonight. The wind took a lot of them and distributed them into my neighbors yard. Very thoughtful I thought. There is still plenty to pick up in both the front and back yards. The blower is also a vacuum so that I can mulch them down and put them in the bin so the yard waste recycle people can come and pick them up.

Nothing really new

Nothing really exciting going on and haven't really felt like blogging. Whether it be bored of it, just being lazy or whatever but, will update on what I've been up to.

Oh my! I guess it has been a while. Oct 27th I had a dr appointment for my knee and still had a lot of pain. He gave me a cortisone shot to help it along. The 1st shot didn't do anything, hence the surgery. I also told him I was thinking of switching to Aleve instead of taking the Ibuprofen. He said to wait a couple of days which I did. I actually take Naproxen Sodium which is Aleve but, cheaper. I take 2 in the morning and if I remember I take 2 at night and it has made a world of difference. The Ibuprofen he had me take was to reduce swelling. The Aleve is a pain reliever and I think that's the difference. I still have to be careful and I can tell when I push too much or walk too fast but, all in all am very happy these days.

Millie asked me to help her with chemo hats for her charity and sent me a box of wonderful yarn. Some of the yarn was donated to her so she passed it along to me. I have 4 hats so far. Not all can be used chemo patients but, nonetheless, will keep someone warm this winter. I am not a scarf making person as it gets boring somewhere around the 6" mark. Maybe it's me or just the pattern but, I find I can't do it. Well, in the box I found 1 skein of Red Heart Soft yarn in Teal. Very pretty color. I am not a teal kind of person but, this is really pretty! I am always on the look out for new patterns. Not that I need any more by any means but, but just to do something different. I came across this scarf pattern. Yeah I know. Remember my above comment? Well this scarf pattern is very easy and is somehow holding my attention. The pattern is called Toasty Twisty. The directions for the right twist was not very clear, as I was not sure which 1st stitch she was referring to. Dumb as that may sound. I found a very clear how to video and it is very easy. The pattern is a 4 row repeat and once you get into it is very easy to remember and also easy enough to tell where you left off. I try and leave off on row 8 so that I know that I have to start with row 5. Anything to make life easier. The size should be 5" x 66" but, mine is about 4 1/2". Not sure I will make the 66" with one skein but, will take it as far as I can. The 4 knit rows at the beginning and end make it flare. It's suppose to be that way.

Well.. it's breakfast time for me and the gang. 2 cats & a dog. lol Hope you all have a good week and will post a pic of the scarf when it's complete.

Post op appt

Yesterday I had an appt with my dr. He wanted to make sure I was not having any problems with my calves or lower leg which would indicate to him, blood clot. Nope.. no problem. He also checked to see how far the leg would bend. Not too far but, farther than last week. The improvement is gradual and very subtle. I brought the pictures with me from the surgery and he went over them with me. WOW! My knee was more messed up than I thought. You can see in the top pic, the 2 spots where he went into my knee.

The top left photo shows where the tear is and the pic below shows it fixed. There are a couple of pics like that. I asked him what that fuzziness is (like in the lower right pic) and he said that was arthritis. I had no idea what it looked like. There was a tear on the inside and outside of the knee and arthritis on the inside and outside of the knee. He said it was hard to tell which came first. At the end of the day does it matter? It's there. I guess he can have his questions also. lol

Dr. Solacoff wants me to continue to ice like I have been. He wants me to keep exercising it and bending it to get the mobility back. I had an idea of trying to use my elliptical machine. That would straighten and bend the knee wouldn't it? Well... it worked! I went very slow with it just to make sure it wouldn't be to painful and ended up doing about 5 min. Maybe a little less. Afterward, I took my Ibuprofen, got my ice and sat and watched the Packer/Bear game. If I can do it a few times a day, I think that would be good. Just not over doing it.

The dr said I was good to go back to work but, with restrictions. I told him that they would not let me back with restrictions. If I'm there, I'm expected to be able to do the job. So, he released me for next Monday, the 4th with no restrictions. Oh boy! Now I have a deadline. I hope this works. I will only have to work 4 days and then have a 3 day weekend. I don't think it will be that bad. *Keeping fingers crossed* I'll bring the Ibuprofen with me so I can take it at lunch. I should be fine. Besides, the guys out back are really good at helping me out if I really need and likewise, I help them also. I may be worrying over nothing. I have to go back to see him in a month which would be Oct 27 @ 12:30. It will be a fast appt so I can use my lunch to go over there. It's only about 5 mins from work. If I'm late coming back, it won't matter. I won't lose that much time. Only mins.

It rained here off and on yesterday. We need it so bad! I was not complaining too much. Just about the humidity it brings. UGH!

Surgery went well

The surgery was scheduled for 1:00pm so, they wanted me there at 11:30am. They pretty much took me right away after checking in. Dr. Solocoff, my orthopedic surgeon, was running a little late with his 1st patient but, seeing as I wasn't going anywhere it really didn't matter. The staff at the surgical center were all fantastic. I'm not sure what time I actually got into the OR but, with everything said and done, we dropped Doug off at work just before his shift started at 4:00pm. That was pretty quick. Dr. Solocoff gave me a Rx for 5mg of Oxycodone which I filled last week. I took one just before I went to bed just in case I needed it during the night. Yesterday, I didn't take any meds at all because I didn't need them. I did take one just before bed. I sat in my recliner the better part of the day and Rachel took great care of me with icing my knee. 1/2 on ... 1/2 off. I got up a few times but, not very often. We will see what today brings. The Ace bandage and everything underneath comes off tomorrow and I'll be able to shower. Can't wait for that! I still can't believe that I am not in any sort of pain or anything. I thought for sure as with anything kind of numbing meds, I should feel something when it wore off. I am just very lucky I guess.
Dr. Solocoff found a tear on the inside and the outside of my knee. He also said there was arthritis in there. I will have to ask him if he meant more than the original find with the X-rays or if that was it. He also took before and after pics of inside my knee which are fascinating to look at. When I go to my appt on the 27th, he told me to bring them and he would explain them to me. I am really glad I decided to take 2 weeks off from work because, it is very slow going and with the amount of standing and walking I have to do in work, it would not be possible for me to do my job. He also said I should be back to normal after 6 weeks. Not too bad. Right from the start they wanted me walking on it, just over overdoing it. I have not been overdoing it. I am doing and listening to what the Dr ordered. It's the only way to get better.

I hope this finds your week going just as well as mine is. I sure do have enough yarn to keep me busy plus the TV. I am sure by the end of the day I will start the boredom thing but, not yet. lol

Good to go!

Everything is a go for surgery on Monday. The lab work was done last Saturday, I had to see my family physician for a medical clearance and EKG which was done yesterday. I have to drop off the form for short term disability to my orthopedic surgeon today. Nothing else to do but, wait. I am taking 2 weeks off which, all of the nurses I have talked to are very happy about. 7 hrs out of the day consists of either standing or walking. The more time I take to heal the better off I'll be in the long run. Good as new? I certainly hope so. lol
One week will be vacation and the 2nd week I'll use the disability. It will only be 60% of my salary but, it's better than no salary and it will only be for 1 week. I have an appt set up for Monday Sept 27 and will return to work Sept 28th. I am not expecting to get all that much accomplished the 1st week. I do have plenty of yarn to keep me busy. :)

I found out that my lys donates the items that are made to the local food bank here in Newark. They in turn donate the items to different charities here in Delaware. I was not sure how it worked or where the items went so I asked. What better way to find out, huh? I have a plan in mind to try and take a month and, whatever I make in that month, I'll alternate between Bridge and Beyond, Millie in NY and local. I am hoping this works. Best laid plans you know. I'll give it my best shot. I have also started using my Ravelry account to keep track of the things I am making. I have found it so much easier having everything in one spot instead of searching through posts. Please feel free to visit if you'd like.

Thank you to everyone for the emails. I so appreciate them. I apologize for not getting back to you. It has been a little crazy here. I will let you know how things go later in the week as I can. In order to not get up as often, I'll have my laptop available.

Our furnace went the other day and had the repairman in yesterday and couldn't fix. So we are also looking at a new furnace. This has not been a good week. Things will get better though. We new when we bought the house that sooner or later we would need a new one. We were just buying time. Well.. the time has come. Good bye old furnace.. hello new more efficient furnace! I look forward to you being here.

Heading for surgery

I have been having a problem with my right knee for a couple of months now. One Friday morning I woke up and my right knee was swollen. I was fine right up until the time I went to bed. Don't know what caused it. I waited until Sunday and woke Rachel and had her come with me to the medical center. They took x-rays and found arthritis. Ok. So now what? The dr there sent me to an orthopedic surgeon down the hall. The pain I am having is on the inside of my knee. The arthritis they found is on the outside. The dr had me icing it 2 - 3 times a day and taking 3 Ibuprofen 3 times a day. He sent me for an MRI last Friday because what he was telling me to do was not working. He even gave me a cortisone shot and it did nothing. I went to see him today for the results of the MRI and it read... a horizontally - oriented tear of the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus. In short.. we are going for surgery on Sept 13th. I will be out of work for 2 weeks. 1 week vacation and 1 week short term disability. This way I don't use up all of my vacation days. At least this is what I hope to have happen. I will check tomorrow.
Now I am scheduling blood work and they want medical clearance and an EKG from my primary physician. I will call for an appt tomorrow for that.
I have an appt to go back to see him Sept 27th. By then I should be well enough to go back to work. He said I should be back to normal after 6 weeks. I hope better than normal. lol

On the knitting front.. I found out last week that my lys donated the items they get to the food bank. They then in turn distribute the items to different charities. I have already given her a pair of mittens and a hat. I meant to give her a couple of food items to take with her on Tuesday but, I didn't get back up there. All in good time. I do have plenty of yarn to keep me busy for quite a while. No problems running short there. lol I won't be driving for a few days either so maybe I better take stock of what I have and don't have.

Anyway.. that's it for now I guess.

Another hat & bootie set

This is another set I finished a couple of days ago. These will go to Millie's goddaughter Tara for little Jayden. I will bring these to the post office tonight. Hopefully they will go out tomorrow.

Just an update

While I was waiting for the kitchen floor to dry, I finished the hat. Now I can vacuum the rug.

This is what I made for Millie's goddaughter Tara's baby Jayden.

Hat pattern used: Fran M's baby Hat Pattern The pattern says to k2 P2 rib for 6". I only did 4". One reason being Jayden is so small and the 2nd reason is because I wanted to make sure I had enough yarn. The hat measures just about 5" in height total. 4" wide.

Yarn used: baby Boutique # 6516. (Sure wish they had names)

Knitting needles used: size 6

Bootie pattern: Easy Knitted Booties Booties measure 3" high and 2 3/4" foot length

Not sure of a title so we'll just go with that.
Sandie sent out an email to the group that Millie's goddaughter had a baby. Not just a baby but a tiny 1lb 7oz baby! That is so tiny! So people are sending hats, booties & blankets. I went to my lys and asked Linda what is the best yarn to use. I told her the size of Jayden and that it had to be soft. It also had to be light weight because they live in Florida. She brought me over to the baby yarn. Oh My! It is so soft! I have booties made already and am just about done with the hat which I'll post a pic of as soon as I'm done. I think Tara will like this. The name of the yarn is Baby Boutique by Plymouth Yarn. It's 50% Microfiber and 50% Nylon. Size 7 needles are recommended but, I am using size 6. I also couldn't resist getting Baby Bunny also by Plymouth Yarn. It's 60% Pima Cotton, 30% Modal (have no idea what that is), and 10% Angora. All of the yarn is machine wash & machine dry.

Rachel made fajitas yesterday afternoon, as Doug and Steve had to work. Later in the day, I was wondering what I was going to have to eat. I knew they opened a Chick-Fil-A up at the mall. We have never been. So I said to Rach.. how about going to Chick-Fil-A? She was thrilled to say the least. The people who work there are so pleasant! The place was so clean! The food was so good! Real chicken fillet? and the waffle fries? to die for! I will be going back. While we were eating, I told Rach how my friend Sandie down in La. goes to Chick-Fil-A all the time. I'm sure I made sound like she lives there but, it seems she posts about it a lot. I can now see why she does. This will not be my last visit! I had the #2 meal. Chicken with lettuce, tomato, and American cheese. Oh My! This is no McDonald chicken that's for sure! I left very happy. Also.. on July 9th, if you come dressed as a cow, (it's cow appreciation day), you'll get a free sandwich. How cool is that. lol

Well I guess that's it for now. Mike is coming down for the weekend and I still have a couple of things left to do. Wash the kitchen floor and vacuum the living room rug. Rach & I worked hard yesterday getting things done. Not like it needed to be done anyway. It's just nice to have a little motivation. lol

Have a safe and happy 4th weekend! 5 years ago we used to sit in our front yard to watch the fireworks at the stadium at the University of Delaware. The trees have grown since then and now find we have to walk across the street. lol They put on a very good show of fireworks. I look forward to it every year.

I signed up for another class

This time I am knitting something for myself. Something I have never done. The pattern is called The Wonderful Wallaby. It's a hooded sweater, which will come in handy for the winter. Yesterday I went to my lys and purchased the yarn for it. After much going back and forth deciding which yarn I wanted to use, I finally decided to use the Plymouth Encore in a darker shade of purple. The yarn is machine wash & dry. I was going to use the Cascade 220 yarn but, it is not wash & dry. If I can't through it in the washer & dryer forget it. lol I like easy. It's not suppose to shrink either.

There are so many different sizes in the book to make.From a child size 2 to an adult super size. I am making a size up from what I would normally do just because I like wearing a shirt under my sweatshirts and this will be no different and I want a lot of room.

I am really excited about this project. I have never made anything for myself outside of a hat for winter. The class is in 3 parts. Sat June 5th 11:30 - 1:00pm, Sat June 19th 11:30 - 1:00pm and Sat July 10th 11:30 - 1:00pm.

In order to do this project, I would not allow myself to get the yarn until I caught up with UFOs. I did that. :) I finished the thumb on a mitten and will be sending these out to Sandy for the Bridge Project. I also finished a scarf I started. I will be sending the scarf along with a hat out to Scarlet for The Metro Hotel. She said it was not due until Christmas but, it's done and will be sent out. I finished the increases on the Fantasy Naturale baby sweater and am waiting for the next class to finish that up.

It was suppose to rain at some point yesterday but, held off to a little bit ago. Yeah I guess we can use the rain. It's going to be so hot this week, maybe this is a good thing to get everything watered before then. The grass got cut yesterday and is looking good. Roses are getting watered and looking good. Everything is so green! I love it!

Top Down Baby Sweater

Tomorrow I am going to Stitches with Style from 6 - 7:30pm for a class on the Top Down Baby Sweater. It is made with Fantasy Naturale yarn. It is a cotton yarn so, it's a light weight sweater. Linda had one made up at the store and it looks so cute. I actually had some Lion Brand Baby Soft in Pastel Yellow and started working the pattern. I have the yolk done and the increases done and started working the sleeve. In most patterns I have come across, they put the sleeves on holders and work the body then go back and make the sleeves. This one they are making the one sleeve first then going back to the body but, I do not see on the pattern when you do the 2nd sleeve. I have not done the 1st sleeve and will take that to class. She is also teaching gauging. I bought a hank of the Fantasy Naturale in a light purple and will be using size 7 Hiya Hiya knitting needles. The pattern also gives you a choice of casting on 53, 57, or 61 sts. I choose the 61 sts. Not sure how much of a difference a couple of sts make but, I'm I'll find out. lol
When thing items for charity, gauging was never an issue. People are all different sizes and it will fit someone somewhere. It will be neat to learn something new. By the time I'm done, I'll have 2 sweaters instead of one.
I better print out another pattern to put with the cotton yarn as I have the other pattern written all over. It says to work established pattern etc. Well.. what I did was, I wrote out each increase row with the number of sts that row will have. I have to have things written out.

I finished another Pythagorean Hat today. The pattern is still a difficult to see. Maybe the problem is it's laying flat.
The yarn I used for this one is Cascade 220 also. This color is called Tahiti.
I used size 8 knitting needles and dpns. The size 8 dpns made the decreases a look a lot better. This hat is also going to Sandy for The Bridge Project. I will see what else I can get done this week and get them in the mail over the next weekend.

A hat to go with the mittens.

The pic really doesn't show the pattern like I had thought it would. Maybe because it is not a solid color.
Pattern used: Pythagorean Hat pattern. If you click on the link, the pattern on the hat there will show up a lot better. Hat is knit in the round which means no seaming. :o)
I will def make this hat again. Very easy and quick knit.
Knitting needles used: Boye size 8 (5mm) -16" circ and Hiya Hiya size 9 (5.5mm) DPNs (double pointed needles)
Yarn used: Cascade 220 #9437. After much searching, the color name is Malta. Wish the label said that. *Sigh*

This hat will accompany the mittens to Ohio for Sandy for the Bridge Project.

Hope your week is going well. It looks like I will be working Saturday which means, my one day off this week is non-existent. The overtime money will be nice though. Good thing next week is my 3 day weekend so I only have to work until Thursday.

Happy Mother's Day!

I just want to wish everyone a Happy Mother's Day. I hope you have a wonderful day.

These mittens were made with Panda Man Paw Warmer pattern. So far this is the only mitten pattern I have been able to do. The pattern is knit throughout but, the knit rows can very easily be substituted with purl rows to make a right and wrong side. I think I did that once.

The yarn used: Cascade 220. There is no color name, only a number. The color is purple with light purple. I put these mittens on and I don't feel the yarn is at all scratchy. Very wearable and very warm. I used size 8 knitting needles. Yarn label suggests size 7 or 8. I started these Friday and finished last night. These mittens will be going to Sandy for the Bridge Project. I have not sent to her in a little while.

A couple weeks ago my lys, Stitches With Style, went green. They no longer supply bags for purchases. Large or small. They encourage you to bring your own. If you don't bring a bag, your card does not get punched for purchases. They had one pattern for a bag that was a knit pattern. After reading through it, it sounded confusing and didn't bother with it. In last weeks newsletter, Linda announced that for the crocheters, there is a free pattern at there website. I clicked through and was pleasantly surprised to see it was Suzie's Go Green Market Bag pattern.

Before I left my knitting class yesterday, I bought 3 skeins of yarn just for this purpose. The bag on the left was made with Pound of Love yarn. I think it was pale green or something. The bag on the right was made from Plymouth Yarn Encore knitting ww #7141 (variegated) & # 0801. Good thing I incorporated the solid color or I would not have had enough yarn to finish the bag. I have 1 more skein to make 1 more bag. That will mean there will be 3 less plastic bags to bring home for the grocery store. I am really pleased on how they turned out. We'll see how they make out at the store. I have seen some people bring as many as 10 bags with them. I have not seen anyone with crocheted bags before but, why not? I should price the bags they have to sell. The Plymouth yarn bag cost me $5.00 to make. The POL bag was cheaper and came out just as well. I also thought with going green, I should have green yarn. Just my idea of fun, I guess. You can use whatever color you want.

I did use the recommended hook size that went with the pattern. I wouldn't go any bigger with the hook unless you are a tight crocheter. I wouldn't want any more stretch to the bag. I also went with the shorter handles to eliminate stretch also. I did use a cd in the bottom also.

The top hat is another Snowflake Hat pattern. I think I linked the pattern with the blue hat.

Yarn used: Plymouth Yarn Encore Knitting Worsted Weight color # 999 & 449. The colors don't have names just numbers. 999 is the darker color. I used size 9 circular knitting needles.

The bottom hat was made from Aly's Owl pattern. I had enough yarn left over from the Snowflake Hat to make this one and I still have some left. I used size 7 circular knitting needles. Both are quite easy to make. They are also machine washable & tumble dry. The yarn is 75% Acrylic & 25% Wool. Really nice to work with.

I am excited about the way they turned out. They will be nice and warm.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. The sun is out and melting the snow! YAY! Especially on the streets. The roads in our community are still really bad but, are getting better. Hopefully by July. Just kidding. lol

Learning from my mistakes

I thought Ruffles were the only thing to have ridges. Well... as it turned out, my hat does also. No.. they are not suppose to be there.

I have always avoided doing knitting in the round. Not sure why. I don't know if I thought of it too intimidating or what. It's really rather easy and it avoids sewing a seam after. It just makes for a neater look. Anyway, the lady at Stitches With Style. Yarn, circular needle I would need. Off I went. So excited about doing something different. Everything was going well, so I thought. When knitting on straight needles, (or using circulars but, not knitting in the round, and the pattern calls for st st (stockinette stitch) it means to knit one round (front) and purl (back) the next. That is what I did. Wrong! That's why the ridge at the start of the decrease (towards top of hat). UGH! I then found a place, I forget where I found it now, that has instructions on knitting in the round. When the pattern calls for stockinette st, you have to knit every row because you are not knitting in the back of your work. NOW I find it. lol The other thing I will do different is to change to double pointed needles sooner. The holes are a little big for my liking but, was trying to finish the hat on the circular needles. It was not happening and it didn't come out tight enough.

I have made notes on the pattern for next time. I have started another hat with this same pattern but, different colors. So far so good. I am up to the point where I am going to start the snowflakes. Will post a pic when I start to change colors. When I finish the hat you will be able to tell the difference between the right way and the wrong way.

For this hat, the posted the yarn in the previous post. I used size 7 circ but, 16" long. This next hat I am using the same yarn in like a cranberry and light pink with white snowflakes but, using a size 9 circ 16" long.

I like learning new things but, only when I feel ready to do it. lol I'm glad I made this hat. I will not shy away from making things in the round any more.

I hope everyone has a Happy Valentine's day. Doug had off from work yesterday so, we went to dinner at TGI Fridays. We love that restaurant and have never had a bad meal there. I found a new drink. A Mudslide Martini. SO GOOD! It's a little stronger than a regular Mudslide and it's served in a martini glass. My new fav. lol

Something different

After being closed all week due to the snow, my lys, Stitches With Style, was open today. I was up there at 10:00 right when they opened. One reason was to drop of a couple of kid hats I had made from their charity bin 2, to see if the scarf I am making was ok ( I will post a pic of that soon) and to see if I could get yarn for a pattern I found. It's called Snowflake Hat. I am half done with the snowflakes at this point. I start the next color now. I was looking for the name of the color and they don't have names. They have numbers. How odd. lol I like this yarn very much. It's squishy. It is going to make for a warm hat. If this comes out ok, I will see if I can make some more in different colors. So far it's easy. We'll see how the rest of it goes. Will post another pic when it's finished. It's nice to work outside the box. Makes me think which is good.

Snow!

If I ever see this much snow again it will be way too soon. I have been enjoying the winters here in Delaware. So far, the last 3 winters have been non existent. The snow we did get was gone shortly thereafter. This amount of snow is not going anywhere any time soon. This is what we were used to in CT. The weather people are saying we are suppose to be getting another 1" or 2" next week. Do we need more? No! Will it be good for the water supply? Most definitely. The only thing is, we have to worry about flooding when all of this melts. We don't personally but, because it's so flat, a lot of roads get flooded. Even in heavy rain.

We have been very lucky as far as losing power. We only lost it for a little over 4 hrs last night. Had a nice fire going and candles lit. Did a little bit of knitting by the candles but, it wasn't easy. lol Decided to just relax.

Steve & I just got done shoveling the driveway. Nobody in the neighborhood has been coming in or going out. Snow is starting to melt a little bit so, I am hoping the main roads are clearing up a little.

A very exciting day

Last night as I was roaming and searching the internet, I found my local yarn shop, Stitches With Style. They have a blog with monthly classes. I was looking through the month of February and found a couple I thought I would be interested in. One class on Saturday Feb 13th is not really a class but, they call it that so that you have to sign up so they know how many will be there. It is a Chemo Cap class. You bring your own yarn and needles and patterns and work on the hat there. If you don't have yarn, some has already been donated that you could use if you didn't have any yourself. The caps are then donated to the Ronald McDonald House at AI Dupont Children's Hospital in Wilmington which not not too far away. It should be a good night.

The other class is for a cable scarf which will be held on Feb 28th. Mega Cables the pattern calls it. The girl showed me a scarf in progress and it is quite pretty. I asked her for help in picking out yarn as I had never purchased yarn there before. They have all kinds of yarn from what I saw was $14.00 a skein to a more reasonable price. I could never justify spending $14.00 (or more) on a skein of yarn. She helped me pick out Plymouth Yarn Encore Chunky Bulky knitting weight 75% Acrylic & 25% wool. It is so soft and machine washable and gentle tumble dry. I like that. I think it will be nice when it's done.

We also talked about charity work. What they have is a 3 tier baskets with zip lock baggies. Each baggy has a pattern and enough yarn for the pattern. It is totally free. The yarn is free. The pattern is free.. all I have to do is to make up the pattern and bring it back to them to donate. I got 2 baggies the same. Different color yarn. It is a Watch Cap pattern for the Seaman's Center in Wilmington. As you can see it didn't take me long to get started. lol I can bring these hats back any time I finish. There is no deadline for them. They had baby patterns there and more Watch Caps. There were others but, didn't look through everything. In the long run, I actually found a way to donate locally with no cost to me except for the gas to there and back which is only a 15 min trip one way. I came home very excited.
This does not mean however, I will stop working on hats for others. Scarlet, Sandy and Millie are all working on hats and scarves for the homeless. This just gives me an opportunity that I was looking for to donate here.
The other thing about the store is .. there is a table and chairs and if you want to, you can go up there and just knit. Work on new patterns or WIPs or anything you want. Very informal and there is always someone there to help out if you have a problem with anything. I hope to meet some nice people there. So far.. so good. :)

Helping Haiti

When disaster strikes, everyone wants to do something but, most don't know how or what to do. My Steve mentioned over the weekend about making hats to send down. I could very well do that I said. I also told him they need blankets. Yesterday I received an email from Bev Q. through her challenge group. On her website is a place to donate squares for blankets. Hugs for Haiti is a Ravelry group collecting squares for Haiti. World Care is also collecting washcloths for Haiti.
I have 15 squares that have been sitting here forever. Forgetting who they were going for or what. I will get these washed and sent out over the weekend.

Jack hard at work

Jack was getting bored hanging around with nothing to do so, I made a couple hats for him to model. He was very happy to help me out.

Hook used: L

Yarn used: Both hats were made with the Deborah Norville Collection Serenity Chunky weight. The hat on top was made with Stormy and the bottom hat was made with Almond. These will go in the box to Millie.

I do not have the specifics on the homeless shelter that Millie delivers these to. I found out she was doing this through an email from Bev's charity challenge. I will look through my emails and see if I can find anything out. If I do I will post it.

A little warmer today

Yesterday was suppose to reach 43 deg. Today is suppose to reach 46. The wind has not been as bad which, that in itself, makes things feel warmer even if it really isn't. I can live with this!

The 2 hats above are going in the box to Millie for the homeless. I am hoping to get the box filled over this weekend so that I can get it mailed out to her. I am still working on the scarf. That will be ongoing until I finish it. It's a 24 row repeat. I was doing 1 repeat in little over a day. When working, I don't have much time to work on it. Only on breaks. I have tried working on it at night but, it doesn't work. I take 15 to 20 mins in the morning before I shower in the morning to get a little bit done. Will post a pic of the progress maybe tomorrow.

Happy Jan. 2nd! lol

It didn't take much for me to rejoin Bev's charity challenge again. I set my goal the same as last year. 200 items. When I did this before, I figured out how many items I needed to make a week in order to make my goal. Roughly 4 items. Which isn't much at all. Some weeks may be easier to do more than others. Am I going to stress about it? Nope! Whatever I get done.. I get done. Being stressed about numbers is silly. That's not what we do this for or why. It's just something to strive for, keeping us motivated.

We are going out to dinner soon. Can't wait! I'm hungry! lol I received a Kitchen Aid mixer for Christmas and am having fun using it. I have made Banana Nut Bread and bran muffins so far. So good! :) Didn't think about adding raisins to the muffins but, will the next time.

Happy New Year!

Wishing everyone a happy & healthy new year.

I was checking out my charity goal for this year. I set it at 200 items. I really thought that 200 was attainable but, I did not make my goal. The good news is, I sent out 93 items and that's 93 people I helped this year. Put them all in a room and that's a lot of people. Upset I didn't make it? Nope! I didn't make anything over the summer which hurt my chances of making my goal. If I were to just crochet items it would be no problem. It goes so much fasting than knitting does but, I knitted mittens and hats and those items take me longer to do. Will I join the challenge next year? You bet! Those ladies rocked this year! The group, as a whole, made over 52,000 items! That is awesome!

I don't know what 2010 has in store for me but, I do know that a big part of it will be my charity giving. I have started a new to me knitting hat pattern. It uses 2 colors. Have have done anything like that so, it'll be interesting to see how I make out with it. It is so much easier using one color and just going but, felt the need to challenge myself a bit.

Record snowfall

yep! we certainly had a lot of snow. This pic was taken Sunday during the clean up. We are hoping that it lasts until Christmas. That would be so nice. It is really beautiful at night with all the Christmas lights on. Of course, this storm could not have come at a worse time, as Saturday was our 22nd anniversary. We always go out to to eat somewhere and this year was to be no exception. Mother Nature had her own ideas though. We stayed in and ordered out. The pizza place we order from was delivering so we let them. They are 2 mins right around the corner. We gave him an extra tip for coming out in such bad weather. It was a very relaxing day. We will go out to eat at some point. Just not sure when. This is the kind of snowfall we were used to in Ct. This is what we moved away from . As Steve & I were shoveling, I said.. Ahhhh! the good ole days. No more! That's enough! lol Got some good crochet time in though. This is what snow is good for.

Another pair of mittens

I used the same pattern as the mittens in the previous post except, where I was suppose to knit, I purled, which gave it a different look. These have a right and wrong side where the other pair is the same inside and out.

I really like how this pattern works up especially with this yarn. This is the only knit pattern I have found so far that I was able to do.

Mittens for the Bridge

These are easy to make but, because it is a knit pattern, it goes a little slower than a crocheted pattern. I have another pair almost completed with the same pattern but will look different.

Yarn used Purple 2 Rainbow Classic Pattern.

With this pair of mittens, I followed the directions and knitted every row. With the next pair, I knitted one row and purled the next row. It gives the mittens a whole different look.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I worked Black Friday (yesterday) so I was not out in the madness. I didn't miss it either. lol Maybe next year.

Here are 3 more hats I finished this week.

I used the same needles on all 3: Susan Bates Velocity size 9 - 29" circular

I don't care for her crochet hooks but, love the Velocity needles. Have them in a few sizes.

The yarn I used left to right: Purple Rainbow Classic Pattern, Turquoise 2 Rainbow Classic Pattern, Patons Classic Wool in Wedgewood.

I lost count of how many days we have had rain but, I hope this is the last of it. All of this rain is from Hurricane Ida. Luckily, we have not had flooding or lost power or anything due to the high winds and rain from her. Today is suppose to be just a drizzly day. A good day to get some much needed housework done. Doug got laundry done yesterday, I got the towels done last night so today will be sheets when Doug gets up this afternoon. Not much else planned. I figured the kids can go grocery shopping. Rachel is quite good at it and uses the flyer and specials to save a lot. Yep! Sounds like a plan.

Super Simple Hat pattern

Super simple Hat pattern. I'm not sure what is different about today than yesterday but, I was able to get to Marlo's site with no problem. so here is the link to the pattern. the pattern can be used from newborn to adult with any yarn. Single strand or double. I'm not sure how many hats I have made over the years with this pattern but, it is one of my favs.

Today has been gorgeous. In the 70's. Doors & windows open. You gotta love it. I keep saying that this is not right that it should be this warm in Nov but, I am certainly not complaining.

I have one more hat completed and have started another. Everyone is doing such a great job sending items to Sandy for the homeless. It certainly feels good to know we are helping people, one person at a time.

We had a very busy day today taking care of leaves. I went over them with the lawn mower so it made it some what easier than blowing them in a pile then picking them up. They were all mulched down to nothing. I still had to blow off the sidewalk and stuff but, we ended up with only 3 bags and not 20 as in the last 3 years.

I have 2 more Earflap Hats that will fit in the box. Both made with a J hook. One is made with Sensations Purple 2 Rainbow Classic Pattern and the other is Sensations Lav/Pink Multi Rnbw Classic. Both nice fuzzy and warm hats.

I will get this box out this week.

I posted the link to the Earflap pattern a couple of posts down if you'd like it. It takes no time at all to make these hats.

Yarn: Serenity Chunky Weight in the Deborah Norville collection in Pink Candy.

Hook: I used a J hook.

One note about the Earflap pattern. I did follow the pattern up until the ties. How I made them: I ch 50, sl st to one side, 2 sl st in each "hole" (10 sl st) sl st across (15) to other flap, 2 sl st in each "hole" sl st one more time and ch 50.

Needles: size 9

Another fav pattern

This Kids Earflap Hat pattern is so quick and easy. This is quickly becoming another fav of mine.
This hat I used 2 strands of ww yarn with a J hook. One strand of Lion Brand Pound of Love in Denim and one strand of Lion Brand Pound of Love in White. It really looks better in person than in the pic.
This will go along with the others to Sandy for The Bridge Project.
I have 1 more 50% off coupon and 1 more 40% off coupon for JOANNS. I not only get them through snail mail I get them through email. :) I have to be careful though, some are only good online. Which is ok too.

Kids Earflap Hat

This is what I've been up to this week. a lot of times a pattern will come through my email. Sometimes I print it.. sometimes I don't. Depending on how complicated or time consuming a pattern it is. When I saw this one, it seemed like a very easy pattern and not much time to make it. I was correct. The name of the pattern is Kids Earflap Hat. Copyright 2009 Tiffany Roan. There is a pic of it and it looked like a really warm hat. It calls for one skein of chunky or 2 strands of ww yarn.

The blue hat on the left was made with Deborah Norville collection. Serenity chunky weight in Seven Seas. This yarn is so incredibly soft. I just love working with it. I used a J hook.

The hat in the middle was made with Sensations Rainbow Classic Pattern in Taupe Rnbw Classic Pattern. I used a with a J hook. This is also a very soft yarn. Even though it is ww yarn, I only used 1 strand to make the hat. Only because the yarn itself is fuzzy and warm. I didn't think it needed 2 strands.

The hat on the right was made with Sensations Rainbow Classic Pattern in Purple 2 Rnbw Classic Pattern. I used a J hook.

Thank you JOANNS for the coupons. I had one 50% off and one 40% off. It's nice to find yarn on sale but, JOANNS insists on sending me coupons every couple of weeks so what am I to do? lol If there is yarn such as Sensations @ $7.99 a skein and not on sale, the coupons are very nice. I can get a few hats or so out of one skein which is nice.

I will be making more before sending them off to Sandy for The Bridge Project.

Box sent out

Yesterday I sent out a box of hats to Sandy for the Bridge Project. It feels really good being back. It seems like it was a really long summer. lol I did not have my camera plugged in so, I didn't get a pic of them. I'm sure Sandy will when she gets a chance. Thanks Sandy.

I had remembered that the lobby of the post office remains open. Even on Sunday. I don't have to go during the week hoping there isn't a long line. I can go anytime. They have an automated center which I love and I don't have to go to the counter any more. As long as the box isn't too big.

New Brady pic

I am not sure how long ago this pic was taken but, my guess is not too long ago. I snagged it from Facebook. He looks very happy in this pic. I can't tell who he looks more like but, again my guess would have to be Amanda. We downloaded Skype and saw him on there a couple of weeks ago and he has grown so much since we saw him in July. We miss him very much.

A rainy day here in Delaware

I seems like forever since I posted anything. Being kind of lazy I suppose. That's what hot, hazy and humid does to me. Makes me feel like not doing anything. The cooler weather seems to be creeping in though. It's still in the 80's but, is so much more doable than than 90 something plus humidity.

On Rachel news, she is all settled in and everything. She is working on changing her driver's license over to Florida. They wanted to go last week because the DMV was raising their prices but, because the line was out the door, and they were not too positive they would accept the residency item they had, they decided to wait. I think Rach was going to try and go Wednesday but, have not heard if it happened or not.

Rachel is so loving taking care of Brady! Who can blame her? He is the cutest! 3 months old already! It just doesn't seem possible. I will snag a new photo of him and post it soon.

On the crocheting news, Tuesday I found yarn (like that's a problem! lol) and my circular needle and a hat pattern and worked on it at break times Thursday and Friday. It felt so good getting back into it again. I have 2 capes done that I will post pics of. These were done a while ago but, never did post them. I will also post the info. Yarn, pattern etc. Winter will be here before we know it and a lot of people are still without warm items. Be it a hat or mittens or a scarf so, it's nice to be able to get back to it.

I am off the next 3 days (including today). My 1st day off consists of catching up on laundry. Clothes, sheets, towels. It is now 8:40am and the 2nd load is in the dryer and the 3rd is done in the washer waiting patiently for it's turn in the dryer. So I am accomplishing a lot with very little physical activity. As it should be. lol

I will be making my blog rounds. Lord knows I haven't done that in a while either. I know some other people tend to take the summer off also because of the heat so, I may not have missed too much.

I suppose I should contemplate showering and getting dressed. Before 9am? Yeah! Why not! lol
Although it's almost 9:00 now and doubt that will happen. Oh well.

It's a bittersweet day today

Rachel, as we speak, is on a plane down to Florida. Not just for a week vacation but, has actually moved there. She should be landing in Tampa about 12:30. She has made a deal with Roger and Amanda, to take care of Brady and they will send her to a 2 yr school. What an awesome deal! Rachel will have to establish residency there for 6 months to take advantage of things but, that will give her time to get settled in and to think about what it is she wants to take in school. She has some idea and will look into things when things settle down some.
She will be greatly missed that is for sure! No more meals ready when I get home from work, Doug will have to make his own lunch for work. I'll miss the fun, the laughing, the goofiness and just plain her. Rachel is a smart girl and will do well in whatever she does. She just has to find her passion and she'll be all set.
We both have a camera set up on our computers and we both have Skype so we'll be all set. We can visit whenever possible.
We wish her luck with whatever it is she persues.

Going back to work

After 4 weeks of the voluntary lay off, I am going back to work today. It was suppose to be 6 weeks but, Doug called Friday and told me that they wanted him to call me and tell me they wanted me back on Monday. Did my boss really think I wouldn't answer the phone if I knew it was him? Yeah! He may have a point. LMAO Since..they were suppose to give me 5 days notice that I would be returning and they gave me nothing! Had I talked to him I would have mentioned that fact. I also have it writing. Ummm...somewhere. lol
I have enjoyed collecting money while I stayed home but, have to admit that getting a 40 hr paycheck will be nice.
Looks like I'll be able to get some crocheting time in again. Haven't gotten any done since the plane ride to Florida.
Hope everyone has a good week and stays cool. It is really nasty here with humidity. The air is so thick. UGH! One reason I am not looking forward to going back to work. Oh well!

New yarn

At Joann's I found a new yarn. I'm not sure how long it's been out but, it is SO soft! I'm not sure if you are familiar with Deborah Norville (Inside Edition) but, she has come out with her own brand of yarn like Vanna did. I did not get any but, I did pick it up and felt it. Even the chunky yarn feels so soft and warm. I'll bet it would make one heck of a warm blanket or shawl for the winter. I will have to try a couple of skeins at some point. For investigative purposes naturally. lol Actually, I do have a couple of 40% and 50% off coupons. I think it runs around $3.29 a skein. Hmmm...I'll have to think this one over.

New Brady pic

Roger is REALLY starting early with all of this Red Sox stuff. lol I can't believe Brady is 2 weeks old already! I mentioned something about brain washing and he said he wasn't. Brain washing is Amanda trying to get him to be a Patriots fan. SIGH! Notice the red, white and blue shirt. You gotta love it! Also, notice whose pic is bigger. This is going to be interesting! LMAO I am not a sports fan so, I really don't care. I just like starting a lot stuff.

I sent the box to Debra at SUNY yesterday. I think I forgot about the post office lobby being open after hours. I was going to go Saturday but it rained so hard I didn't want to go out just to mail a box. I took it with me when Rachel and I went to get groceries and sure enough, I was able to go in. They have a machine to weigh packages and things that I use. It's so much faster than going inside to the counter.

I hope all of the fathers had a good day yesterday. Doug wanted hamburgs cooked on the grill with mac salad. So, Rachel and I made homemade mac salad, deviled eggs, onion rings and cooked up bacon for the burgers. YUM! It was cloudy all day until later on but, at least it didn't rain.

I got my quilt back

There is a woman close by named Susan Crane at From Tops..To Quilts. She does quilting part time out of her home. What a beautiful job she did! I am very happy with how this turned out. I still have to put the binding on and then it's done. :o)

Here's a pic of the quilt I did for Brady. I am banking that they forgot about my blog and are focused on taking care of Brady. lol

and I tried to get a close up of the quilting she did. They are baby items..bibs, spoons, feet, hands, bottles, rattles, etc. It is so cute! lol I hope Roger and Amanda like it.

I hope to bring it down with us instead of mailing down. We are going down July 8th and coming home on Sunday the 12th. We are very excited not so much about Florida in July but, hey! lol

This was made with the Micro Burial Bunting pattern. There is a hat pattern included with the pattern and this hat is that pattern. I will made one more this week and then send the box out next weekend. The shower at SUNY will be June 25th and this will give me 12 hats one Preemie Shell Angel Gown. (This is Beth Parsons pattern. Thank you Beth) and 2 buntings to send up.

The thunder storms and rain have moved out and today is suppose to be a less humid and a sunny day. Although we had the storms roll through yesterday, it was later in the day so we had a chance in the morning to get the lawn mowed and cook steaks on the grill for dinner in plenty of time.

We watched the movie TAKEN while we had dinner. What a great movie! Liam Neeson is in it. If you get a chance to watch it, I highly recommend it. It held my attention until the end and a lot of movies don't do that for me.

Snagged another photo

Keep on taking those pics Roger and Amanda! I'll keep snagging them! LOL

This is my oldest son Roger and Brady. This is his lab Tucker. He's 7 yrs old now. They got home from the hospital around 1:00 this afternoon. Everyone is doing fine. Amanda is a little sad she can't go in the pool for 6 weeks. I told her she can get her legs wet. Small consolation I think. It has been in the 90s down there. Rog said it is June and it is Florida and it is summer. Yep! That's why I won't move down there! What we have been having is enough for me!

We have our hotel and flight reservations made as of tonight. Instead of going down on Thursday, we're going down on Wednesday and coming back on Sunday. We will take Wednesday as a rest day and head on over on Thursday. The hotel has a shuttle service and it's about 5 mins from their house, so it makes sense taking advantage of that. I do not feel comfortable driving in Tampa. It is a BIG city. The streets are BIG. I thought only Texas had BIG. lol Nope! I had actually thought of walking over but, if it's that hot, I think I'll pass.

Wednesday is almost over and we are almost over the hump. Yes people...the weekend is near again! Yippee! The light at the end of the tunnel. Enjoy the rest of your week!

Little Brady is here!

Coming into the world at 3:49 this afternoon, Brady came out weighing 8.6 lbs and 20" long. Both Mom and baby are doing fine and so is Dad. Roger said he will call a little later on tonight. I can't wait to see some pics. If I can get Roger to send me some through email, I may be able to get them to post.

Doug and I will be going down July 9th and coming back July 12th. That is my long weekend and I have been approved to take those 2 days off. It will be great. I have not seen Roger and Amanda in so long anyway. It will be great to see everyone.
