Trying something different

These squares are to become a shawl. I have not tried to make one like this before, so I am not sure how it will turn out. I'm sure it will be ok, though. Just trying to make all the squares as close to 12" as possible for easy assembling later.

This is a 12" Butterfly Garden Square. It is one of Chris Simon's squares. Very easy to do. You can even make it into a 6" square if you wanted to. I made this with Lion Brand Jiffy Kitty Hawk yarn. I used an I hook and only went to row 10 instead of 11 because I had my 12" square made at 10. This square is pretty no matter what yarn you use.

This is called a Leaf Stitch square. This is also very easy to do. I used the same Kitty Hawk yarn with this square also. I chained 35 for 26 rows. It turned out to be an 11" square but with a border on it, it will be 12"

LEAF STITCH

chain multiple of 2 + 1 (odd number)

Row 1: single crochet in second chain from hook and in each chain across, ch 1, turn.

Row 2: sk first sc, 2 sc in next sc, *sk next sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * across, ch 1, turn.

Repeat row 2 for pattern.

Last row: single crochet in each sc across.

I used Lion Brand Jiffy Kitty Hawk for this square also with an I hook.

SEED STITCH

Ch an even number.

Row 1: single crochet in second chain from hook and in each chain across.

Note1: You may use either the back hump method of working into the foundation chain or work under top two loops -- whichever method you prefer.

Note2: Row 1 is your RIGHT side. If you have trouble telling front from back, you might want to mark this side.

Row 2: ch 1, turn, single crochet in first single crochet, * chain 1, skip next sc, single crochet in next sc, repeat from * across. You should finish evenly, with a single crochet in your last stitch.

Row 3 : ch 1, turn, single crochet in first single crochet, single crochet in chain-1 space, *chain 1, skip next single crochet, single crochet in next chain-1 space, repeat from * across row to last stitch, single crochet in last stitch

Here is a pic of the Seed Stitch square. I chained 36 with 31 rows. Unfortunately..I did not measure the chain row or I would have known it was going to be to small. It ended up to be a 10" square. I know there will be a border on it and I can make it 12" but I don't want to end up having to put a 2" border on the squares when all I have to do is to make it bigger to begin with. *shaking my head*. *sigh* The next squares I make I will be more careful with the chain row. I am not new to crocheting so I should have known better.

I used Lion Brand Jiffy Kitty Hawk with an I hook for this square also.

I am finding after puting the borders on the squares, the edges are matching up, even though the squares themselves done seem to measure 12". So..maybe it is more important that there be a set number of border stitches than actually measuring 12". Is it going to look ok? I certainly hope so. :o)
